Keep more time on your side by creating models and prototypes that help you test whether your goals work for you.

Getting used to outlining, physical or digital, what you want helps purify your thinking and clarify your goals. Before you dive head first into solving a problem or building something, you should spend some time outlining exactly what you want. This helps you keep your attention focused on what you want to build.

The problem, is most people don't know what or how much an outline or blueprint should contain, and what elements are necessary and which aren't.

Creating a high-level sketch in under 10 minutes is the first step in figuring things out for yourself and with others.

Next, before things get overblown and underappreciated, estimate the scale of what you do or don't need to do so you start thinking about the right amount of effort.

With things in proper perspective, look into the bones of your effort to find the key things that constitute success.

Outlining - from the outside-in

Outlining helps you look at something from the outside-in. Like taking a picture or drawing a sketch of something.

In the physical world, outlines show us the edges and boundaries of objects. When you sketch a cat, you make body parts, but not fur and texture.

In the digital world, outlines of websites may come in the form of wireframes, or ERD diagrams for databases that show how information is related to other information.

When writing, outlines may be bullet points to help you think of ideas, or to serve as a first draft for an article.

Blueprinting - from the inside-out

Blueprinting is a whole different animal. You make blueprints to show the inside and internal functions of what you're building or analyzing.

In writing, we can say blueprinting is the 2nd-level bullets that flesh out or put texture on the 1st-level bullets. These help us be more specific about what we are explaining and convincing people of.

For something like drawing animals, you would have to draw the bones, muscles, and the fat under the skin. Getting good at anatomical drawing helps an artist think about, draw, and paint more realistic (or exaggerated) works.
